In Germany, leaving a church can stop the payroll deduction

HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

Separation of church and state apparently doesn't apply to the payroll department. In Germany, if you are registered with certain religious denominations, the government will automatically skim eight to nine percent off your income tax and directly deposit it into the church's bank account. You literally have to go to a local courthouse and legally "deregister" your faith if you want to keep your hard-earned euros.
