Instead of drawing a majestic eagle from pure imagination, the nineteenth-century mint relied on a literal local pet. Peter was a tame bald eagle that freely hung out around the Philadelphia Mint machinery until he tragically got caught in a coining press, prompting the workers to stuff him and use his preserved body as the official model for the currency.
