Pirate folklore loves to scream about massive silver coins, but making small change on a remote ship required brutal physical force. The massive Spanish dollar was purposefully scored so that sailors could literally wedge a blade in and snap the silver into eight perfectly even wedge-shaped 'bits', finally explaining why a quarter is still casually called two bits.
