Pieces of eight were money you could divide

The Spanish silver dollar was worth eight reales, and coins were sometimes cut into smaller pieces to make change. The metal itself carried value, so a fraction of the coin could circulate as payment. “Two bits” for a quarter preserves the arithmetic of dividing eight into four.
