When you're the head of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, you clearly need an aesthetic to match your ego. Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers was actually a working-class guy from London, but he became so obsessed with his dubious Scottish heritage that he legally added 'MacGregor' to his name. While running his magical lodge in Paris, he frequently walked the streets in full traditional Scottish Highland regalia, carrying a dirk, and claiming he was receiving psychic warfare attacks from vampires and rival magicians. He was essentially cosplaying his way through the highest levels of occult history.
