Why we want to believe bad people get what they deserve
We badly want to believe the universe has a built-in justice system. If bad things happen to good people, it terrifies us, so we often blame the victim just to reassure ourselves that we are safe. We desperately cling to the idea of karma because the reality of random, unpunished chaos is way too depressing to think about on a Tuesday.
