When a show keeps playing after someone has walked away, the app usually has no reliable way to tell whether anyone is still watching. The “Are you still watching?” message is a simple check: answer it and playback continues; ignore it and the app eventually pauses.
That matters because streaming is an ongoing delivery process. While a video runs, the service sends data to your device and the app keeps advancing through the program. If playback continues in an empty room, the service and your device do work for a viewer who may no longer be there.
A small safeguard with several payoffs
Pausing unattended streams can limit unnecessary data use and keep an account from running through episode after episode. It can also prevent a shared TV from reaching the next person’s place in a series—or leaving a household wondering why the show has advanced.
The prompt is not a precise measure of attention. A viewer may be listening from another room or simply prefer not to touch the remote, while someone who taps “yes” may still have left. It is a low-cost guess, not mind reading: the app asks because it cannot confidently distinguish active watching from playback left on by accident.
