Early barcode scanners needed almost a whole room

Because identifying a can of soup apparently required industrial-level floor space. The earliest grocery store scanners in the seventies were massive, heavy countertops packed with complicated mirrors and glowing tubes. They were incredibly hot, outrageously expensive, and practically required a separate room just to scan a box of cereal.
