A closer look
The ultimate agoraphobic vacation actually exists, and it is located miles below the surface of Cappadocia. Carved entirely out of soft volcanic tuff, Derinkuyu is an ancient, 18-level subterranean doomsday bunker. When invaders threatened the surface, entire populations retreated downwards, rolling massive stone doors shut to seal themselves in. Exploring it today requires bending in half to scurry through terrifyingly narrow ventilation shafts, making it abundantly clear that ancient survival left absolutely no room for claustrophobia.
