A closer look
You would think that designing a multi-million-dollar vehicle for the harshest terrain on Earth would involve testing its tires on, you know, actual snow. The 1939 Antarctic Snow Cruiser was a 75-foot-long, 34-ton monstrosity equipped with a darkroom, crew quarters, and an airplane strapped to its roof. Unfortunately, the brilliant minds behind it installed completely smooth, treadless tires. The very second this colossal beast rolled off the ship in Antarctica, it sank straight into the powder, endlessly spinning its bald tires like an overpowered golf cart until the crew simply abandoned it to the ice.
