A closer look
Trying to describe God is the ultimate exercise in missing the point, according to the mysterious 6th-century monk known as Pseudo-Dionysius. He popularized the via negativa, or apophatic theology, which argues that the supreme being is so radically alien that any positive description is basically blasphemy. To actually experience the divine, you have to aggressively strip away every single image, concept, and thought you have, willfully plunging your mind into a terrifying 'Cloud of Unknowing.' It’s the ultimate spiritual paradox: only by becoming completely blind and intellectually bankrupt can you actually see.
