Because purely functional keys like 'Shift' or 'Enter' simply weren't enough, early Apple hardware had to ensure absolute brand loyalty. The Apple II featured a completely useless key whose sole operational purpose was to proudly display an outline of the Apple logo on the screen. It was arguably the first recorded instance of a tech company forcing hardware onto consumers strictly to stroke its own ego.
