The indie spirit is mostly just a euphemism for catastrophic personal debt. Driven by pure desperation, many legendary low-budget horror directors simply acquired twenty different credit cards, immediately maxed them all out on basic equipment and cheap catering, and prayed the box office returns would hit before bankruptcy.
