Long before quantum mechanics ruined everyone's afternoon, Hermann von Helmholtz and Lord Kelvin decided atoms were just incredibly tiny vortex rings swirling in the 'aether.' Yes, the foundational building blocks of reality were essentially proposed to be microscopic smoke rings tied into intricate knots. The theory was beautifully elegant, mathematically rigorous, and completely, laughably wrong. However, it accidentally birthed modern mathematical knot theory, proving that in physics, you can fail so spectacularly that you invent a whole new branch of math.
