Why redheads may need more anesthesia
Gingers are biologically resistant to pain medicine. The MC1R gene mutation that causes fiery red hair and pale skin also aggressively interferes with the brain's pain receptors. Consequently, redheads typically require about 20% more general anesthesia to stay unconscious during surgery and often need extra shots of lidocaine at the dentist. They are genetic mutants immune to standard sedation.
