When you decapitate your king, you inherit his debts. To solve this, the newly formed French Republic seized all Catholic Church property and issued "assignats"—paper bonds supposedly backed by the value of that stolen real estate. It sounded foolproof until they printed so many assignats that they became practically worthless. By 1795, it took a wheelbarrow of paper to buy a loaf of bread, proving that backing fiat with real estate doesn't stop the money printer from going brrr.
