In 1931, the rural Spanish town of Ezkioga became a circus of mass hysteria when local kids claimed the Virgin Mary was appearing to them. Soon, hundreds of adults joined in, throwing themselves into ecstatic trances to deliver highly convenient political messages against the new secular Republic. It was the 1930s equivalent of a viral TikTok trend, complete with staged photo ops of people staring blankly into the sky.
