Mathematical chaos theory made its debut in a Minnesota backyard. Herbert Sellner built the first spinning ride in 1926 without any modern engineering tools, discovering completely by accident that placing cars on a bumpy, rotating platform resulted in totally unpredictable spinning patterns. Physics professors still use it today to teach chaotic motion.
