Why astrologers treat 0° as a beginning
In a birth chart, a planet’s degree placement marks its position within a zodiac sign. Each sign occupies a 30-degree slice of the zodiac, so 0° is the sign’s starting edge. A planet there has only just entered that sign’s territory; it has not moved far enough, in astrological symbolism, to suggest a settled or practiced expression of the sign’s qualities.
That is the logic behind describing a zero-degree placement as raw. It is not that the planet is literally more powerful or erratic. Rather, the symbolism casts the sign’s traits as newly arrived: present, but still learning how to operate.
A metaphor, not a prediction
Astrologers may use this idea to interpret a planet’s role in a chart. For example, they might read a zero-degree placement as an especially direct or unfiltered expression of that planet through the sign. The toddler comparison makes the interpretation memorable: enthusiasm comes before coordination. But the metaphor does not establish that someone with such a placement will behave immaturely, and astrologers do not all weigh degree symbolism the same way.
The boundary matters, too. A placement just inside a sign is technically at its beginning, while one just before the boundary belongs to the preceding sign. So the “new arrival” interpretation rests on where the chart places the planet—not on a separate force that can be measured. Within astrology, 0° is a symbolic starting line: the sign’s style is onstage, but its performance is only beginning.
