It’s a fun little game for tourists: carry your empty matcha cup for twelve miles because finding a garbage bin is statistically impossible. Following the tragic sarin gas attacks on the Tokyo subway in 1995, the government removed nearly all public trash receptacles to prevent them from being used to hide explosives. Miraculously, rather than tossing garbage everywhere, the public just adapted by bringing their trash home, making Tokyo bizarrely spotless.
