Ignatius of Loyola was heavily debating whether or not he should hunt down and assassinate a guy who had insulted him on the road. Unable to make a rational choice, he dropped the reins and let his donkey decide at a fork in the road. The donkey chose the peaceful path, officially making a pack animal the voice of reason for a major esoteric leader.
