A closer look

Commuting to work on a motorcycle is statistically far more dangerous than recreational skydiving, mostly because gravity is a predictable constant while distracted drivers in minivans are agents of sheer chaos. Jumping out of an airplane involves rigorous safety checks, backup parachutes, and a massive empty sky devoid of obstacles, whereas riding a bike through morning rush hour requires navigating a gauntlet of angry people texting and eating breakfast behind the wheel. A skydiver accepts a highly calculated risk and trusts their equipment to deploy properly, while a motorcyclist blindly trusts that a sleep-deprived accountant in an SUV will bother to check their blind spot before merging. It is wild to think society views jumping from the stratosphere as extreme behavior for adrenaline junkies, yet totally normalizes balancing on a two-wheeled engine block amidst two-ton metal death machines going eighty miles an hour. Asphalt is far less forgiving than a soft canopy landing
