Time zones do not actually exist at the North Pole or the South Pole because all the lines of longitude converge at the absolute top and bottom of the globe. This means that researchers stationed at these extreme ends of the Earth can essentially choose whatever time they want to follow, usually defaulting to the time zone of their home country or the supply base that feeds them. You could technically celebrate New Year's Eve, walk three steps to the left, and celebrate it again, over and over, until you die of hypothermia. The entire concept of 'being late' is completely meaningless when the sun only rises and sets once a year, rendering your expensive smartwatch into a glorified and very confused compass. It is the ultimate geographic loophole for procrastinators, proving that time is merely a social construct designed to make us feel guilty about missing morning Zoom meetings, rather than a universal law of physics you have to respect
