A closer look
The American Dream usually involves stepping on someone else's neck. Ray Kroc was a struggling milkshake machine salesman who discovered the McDonald brothers running an incredibly efficient burger stand. He convinced them to let him franchise it, then ruthlessly maneuvered to buy them out for a mere $2.7 million in 1961. He even successfully built a competing McDonald's right across the street from their original restaurant to drive them out of business. Capitalism, folks.
