It turns out microchips are just as uniquely flawed as human beings. Even two identical radios rolling off the exact same assembly line possess microscopic manufacturing defects that create a distinct, mathematically trackable electromagnetic signature. DARPA is currently fighting a deeply paranoid shadow war against adversaries trying to spoof these hardware fingerprints. They use adversarial machine learning to detect when hackers use software-defined radios to clone the hardware quirks of legitimate military transmitters.
