A closer look
Signing a $100 million NFL contract doesn't mean you're actually getting $100 million. Unlike baseball or basketball, many football contracts are non-guaranteed. If a player shatters their knee in week two, the team can simply cut them, and the player will never see the vast majority of that headline-making cash. It is a masterful PR trick where the team looks incredibly generous on ESPN while legally reserving the right to discard the player for free.
