Magnetic bubble memory tried to ditch moving parts

In a desperate bid to replace fragile spinning hard drives, researchers created chips that formed microscopic circular magnetic bubbles in a thin metallic film. The drive forced these tiny magnetic bubbles to physically march along guided tracks to read the data. It was an ingenious way to move files without moving the drive itself, until cheap flash memory ruthlessly eradicated it from existence.
