The corporation convinced the United States that basic agricultural reform was a massive communist threat, leading to a violent coup that birthed the term banana republic. It is deeply chilling to realize that a company best known for selling tropical fruit was powerful enough to manipulate foreign policy and destroy an entire nation's sovereignty just to protect its profit margins. We act like modern tech monopolies are terrifying, but at least Apple and Google have not actively requested military intervention to crush a grassroots labor movement in Central America yet.
