A closer look
You would think giving someone total control would turn them into a greedy monster, but guilt is a funny thing. In the Dictator Game, one person is given full authority to divide resources however they want, and the second person simply has to accept it without any veto power. Even though they could easily keep 100% of the pie, the vast majority of 'dictators' voluntarily hand over about 20% to 30%. Apparently, the sheer awkwardness of being entirely selfish forces people to share.
