Nothing ruins a spooky, lo-fi archival mystery quite like crisp, modern, 4K digital audio. The creators of the massive immersive podcast The Magnus Archives realized that simply adding a "tape hiss" audio filter in post-production felt incredibly cheap. To achieve the perfect diegetic soundscape for their supernatural statements, they routed their digital vocals out through actual, ancient dictaphones and physical cassette tapes, then re-recorded them back into the computer. They went out of their way to sabotage their own high-end microphones just to make you feel comfortably paranoid.
