A closer look
Not all wells were seen as humble thirst-quenchers. In parts of ancient Turkey, certain wells were whispered about with unease, treated like holes punched through the Earth straight into the underworld. Lowering a bucket wasn’t just about pulling up water—it risked drawing up spirits, or worse, sending yourself tumbling into eternal depths. Locals avoided going near some wells at night, when shadows lengthened and imagination suggested shapes swirling in their darkness. Nowadays, we see stone walls and moss, but once, every drop rippling inside could whisper the edge of another world.
