Because bright colors were rare and highly coveted, these indigenous groups bypassed shiny rocks entirely in favor of striking bird parts. The brilliantly red crests of pileated woodpeckers were laboriously collected, dried, and treated as a highly standardized denomination of wealth, making early avian taxidermy a completely valid form of banking.
