William Castle knew his movies were B-grade trash, so he relied on pure, unadulterated gimmickry to sell tickets. For 'The Tingler,' he actually bolted military surplus vibrating motors to the underside of cinema seats to buzz patrons' butts during the climax. He essentially turned theaters into cheap theme park rides because relying on a good script was simply too boring.
