The candy that melts in your mouth and not in your hand was designed for the brutal trenches of war. Forrest Mars Sr. saw soldiers eating chocolate pellets encased in hard sugar shells during the Spanish Civil War. He patented his own version, and during WWII, M&Ms were sold exclusively to the U.S. military so soldiers could carry chocolate in tropical climates without it turning into a gooey mess.
