A closer look
The first major cyberattack in history might have caused an explosion so massive it was visible from space, all thanks to some deliberately weaponized malware. In 1982, the CIA discovered the Soviets were systematically stealing Western software to run their Siberian gas pipelines. Instead of stopping them, the US allegedly altered a Canadian software package to include a logic bomb. Once installed by the unsuspecting KGB, the code quietly reset pump speeds and valve settings, supposedly resulting in a three-kiloton blast in 1983. It remains one of the most legendary legends of industrial sabotage.
