A closer look
Thailand is home to a chaotic railway market in Maeklong where hundreds of vendors set up their fresh produce and fish stalls directly on top of an active, functioning train track. Several times a day, a massive locomotive slowly rolls through the incredibly narrow market, forcing shopkeepers to casually retract their awnings and pull back their baskets of durian just inches from the heavy steel wheels. The second the train passes, the umbrellas pop back out and commerce resumes as if a multi-ton transport vehicle didn't just casually disrupt their entire livelihood. It is an anxiety-inducing spectacle that proves capitalism will literally adapt to the threat of being run over by a train
