The grandfather of all collectible card games was originally conceived as glorified lobby music. Garfield, a mathematics PhD student, pitched a complicated board game to a publisher who rejected it for being too expensive to produce. They asked for something small and cheap that people could play in between longer games at conventions. He slapped together a quick fantasy card battler, accidentally creating a cardboard economy worth billions.
