Who needs ether when you have some guy aggressively waving his hands over your face? Franz Mesmer invented 'animal magnetism,' claiming an invisible fluid connected all living things. Some doctors bought into this mystical nonsense so hard that they performed actual surgeries on patients who were supposedly numbed by 'mesmeric trances.' Naturally, a lot of people just woke up screaming.
