A closer look
The most important digital library in the world is quite literally a religion. The Internet Archive, responsible for the Wayback Machine and keeping our volatile digital history from dissolving into the ether, is housed inside a gorgeous, retrofitted former Christian Science church in San Francisco. Instead of pews, it has glowing racks of servers humming away, storing hundreds of petabytes of angsty early-2000s blog posts, dead memes, and flash games. It is a holy sanctuary for deleted content.
