A closer look
You probably speak more kindly to a barista than to the person you love most. Emotional safety has a dark side: once we are sure someone will not leave easily, we start treating them as an outlet for our frustration. We snap, roll our eyes, use sarcasm we would never dare with a colleague. Over time, the brain rewires; their face becomes linked not with comfort but with tension. Strangely, people often behave better right after a breakup scare, because the threat of loss temporarily resets politeness. The real fix is not grand romantic gestures, but tiny rules: no insults during arguments, no fighting while texting, no bringing up three old issues when you are angry about one new thing. Notice if you thank strangers more than your partner; that gap is the first sign your relationship is running on autopilot disrespect.
