The foundation of all modern text messaging, Reddit threads, and poorly formatted emails is essentially an upgraded telegraph. ASCII was standardized in 1963 so entirely different computer mainframes could finally agree on what the letter 'A' looked like in binary, preventing early networks from spitting out complete gibberish.
