Darwin gave us the brilliant theory of natural selection, but Madame Blavatsky decided we actually evolved from giant, translucent, egg-laying jellyfish people. Theosophical doctrine claims these ethereal beings lived on Lemuria, a continent that supposedly sank into the Indian Ocean. It’s comforting to know that Victorian mysticism basically sounded like the plot of a terrible sci-fi B-movie.
