Valve threw away most of Half-Life and started over
Imagine finishing 80% of your massive project and then casually throwing it in the trash because it wasn't 'fun enough'. Valve looked at their 1997 build of Half-Life, realized it was just a generic Doom clone, and basically started over. This catastrophic delay terrified their publishers but resulted in the greatest shooter of the decade, cementing Valve's legacy of never, ever releasing anything on time.
