The mystical 'Zodiac' is honestly just a byproduct of gravitational laziness. The solar system formed from a spinning disk of dust, meaning all the planets orbit the Sun on roughly the same flat 2D plane (the ecliptic). From our perspective, they all seem to march single-file through the exact same narrow band of constellations. The magic of the zodiac is literally just basic planetary traffic lanes.
