How a navel gets lost in retouching
A belly button is a small but distinctive feature: a shallow fold, a dark center, and a soft shadow make the abdomen read as a three-dimensional surface. Retouching can erase those cues while trying to even out skin or smooth the torso’s contours.
Editors may use tools that copy nearby skin over a spot or blend uneven tones. More extensive reshaping can further flatten the area. If the navel is treated like another patch of texture to clean up, its defining shadows and edges can disappear along with the skin marks around it.
The cost of a perfectly smooth surface
In swimsuit images, the aim may be a polished, uninterrupted look across the body. But a belly button is not just a blemish or irregularity; it is a familiar landmark that helps viewers recognize the abdomen as a natural body.
