Why sewing-machine needles have the eye at the tip

For centuries, hand-sewing needles always placed the eye firmly at the top. When attempting to mechanize the process, engineers repeatedly failed until someone finally realized that entirely flipping the needle upside down was the secret. By placing the eye directly at the sharp tip, the machine could quickly punch through fabric without pulling the entire thread.
