Early computers remembered data with echoes in mercury

HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

Early radar and computing systems lacked RAM, so they stored data by turning electrical pulses into sound waves and firing them down a long tube filled with liquid mercury. The sound would take a fraction of a second to reach the other side, acting as a bizarre form of temporary physical storage. We literally used echoing shouts in toxic metal to remember numbers.
