A closer look
Thank the marketing gods for small mercies. Before Sonic sped into our lives, Sega's unofficial mascot was Opa-Opa, the star of the arcade game Fantasy Zone. The character was literally a sentient spaceship with wings, feet, and an alarmingly large green nose. It was incredibly popular in Japan but lacked the edgy, cool-guy attitude needed to sell consoles to aggressive American teenagers in the 1990s. Thus, the weird ship was quietly retired to the annals of gaming trivia.
