Half a byte has an adorable name
In a rare moment of whimsy from the socially awkward pioneers of computer science, data got cute. Since eight bits make a 'byte' (bite), they naturally decided that four bits—half a byte—should be called a 'nybble' or 'nibble'. It's the only time computer architecture makes you think of a hamster eating a carrot.
