Frost as a picture of severity

The image works by turning an abstract temperament into a physical effect. Frost can leave a landscape looking crisp and still while damaging tender leaves and young shoots. In the metaphor, that is Capricorn’s “stern realism”: a preference for limits, risks, and what can actually be done that may protect a plan from wishful thinking—but can also chill an idea before it has room to grow.

The Capricorn association

In astrology, Capricorn is commonly portrayed as practical, disciplined, and cautious. Its symbolism is also linked with the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere, when growth appears dormant and survival depends on conserving resources. The frost comparison draws on both associations: composure and restraint on the surface, with a potentially harsh effect on more carefree impulses.

Calling the frost “horrible” makes the criticism pointed. The trait is not simply sensible; it is realism applied so rigidly that spontaneity and fragile beginnings may be treated as liabilities. That makes the metaphor useful as a character sketch, not a forecast: it captures the tension between keeping an idea grounded and freezing it before it can take root.
