A Teacher as a Guide Through Ignorance
In a traditional Sanskrit interpretation, the word guru is divided into gu, “darkness,” and ru, “dispeller.” The “darkness” is not literal night: it stands for ignorance, confusion, or a failure to see clearly. A guru, in this spiritual sense, helps a student move toward understanding.
